Growing up in a musical family, and as a multi-instrumentalist and artist in Los Angeles, Joseph DeRusha enjoys abundant exposure to an unusual variety of cultures, genres, and scenes. His earliest recollections, before he learned to speak, revolve around jam sessions in the family’s living room where musicians from diverse backgrounds taught him the language and joy of music. To this day, DeRusha opens his home, playing host to a variety of traditional folk music forms and jam sessions.
Seeking every opportunity to explore music with others, DeRusha regularly performs music in clubs, bars, temples, synagogues and churches. In doing so he continues exploring the boundaries of culture, religion and personal perspective. To make sense of this incredible city, DeRusha says, “I often imagine that its distinct forms are like a spectrum and I serve as a prism, uniting them back to their common source.”
As an artist, DeRusha believes his job is to use natural patterns to unite diverse elements and, in their connecting points, to find the unifying jewel inherent in each that shines brighter in the context and contrast of its surrounding elements.
